Ninety-nine projects. That's the number RootData has formally logged as dead in 2026 — a count tallied in its "Crypto Industry Dead Projects List" and reported by U.Today.

The 2026 Crypto Wipeout: Why 99 Projects Have Officially Collapsed

The breadth of those casualties tells you more about this cycle than any floor price chart. For anyone still holding PFPs or digital art minted on dying infrastructure, the math just got uncomfortable.

What's actually on the list

RootData isn't tracking quiet exits. The methodology flags projects that formally shut down, filed for bankruptcy, or vanished behind extended website outages. Per U.Today's write-up, the 2026 casualty roll includes wallets like Family, Ctrl, and Leap; centralized exchanges BitMart, BitMEX, and AscendEX; and infrastructure and DeFi names — Zapper, Stream Finance, Parsec, Loopring, Goldfinch. The household brands show up alongside the obscure startups, and that mix matters more than any single obituary.

The real headline is vertical coverage. Earlier wipeouts had a sector signature — ICO implosions in 2018, centralized lender collapses in 2022. This one doesn't. The list spans exchanges, lending protocols, NFT platforms, Layer-2 networks, wallets, AI projects, and developer tools. That's not a niche purge. That's a systemic flush, and almost every corner of the ecosystem has felt it.

The concentration thesis

ARK Invest researcher Lorenzo Valente reads the same data differently, per The Cryptonomist: this isn't cyclical cleanup, it's structural consolidation, and it's more unforgiving than anything that came before. The revenue math backs him up. Hyperliquid and PumpFun together capture 67% of total crypto application revenue. Add Ethena and the top three sit at roughly 80%. Concentration that aggressive leaves almost no oxygen for the long tail — and the long tail is where most NFT marketplaces, minting tools, and secondary liquidity actually lives.

For collectors, that's the part that hits home. Your JPEG isn't just sitting on a marketplace — it's sitting on infrastructure with a half-life. Platforms without product-market fit don't pivot when capital gets selective. They go dark, they get acquired for scraps, or they file and disappear. The provenance story you tell at auction suddenly has a missing chapter.

What to watch from here

Valente expects the consolidation to accelerate through M&A, acqui-hires, and harder exits in the months ahead. Translated for the NFT floor-price crowd: expect marketplace consolidation, expect tooling consolidation, expect the gap between blue-chip PFPs and everything else to widen into a chasm. The cultural premium won't disappear — it'll just concentrate. We've watched the same arc play out in pop culture hype cycles — announcement peak, secondary froth, then silence — and crypto just runs that script with more zeros and a faster clock.

The actionable read is simple. Diversify where you custody and where you trade. Audit the stack underneath your collection — chain, marketplace, wallet. If any leg of that sits on a name in RootData's index, treat it as a live risk, not a hypothetical one. In a market this compressed, survival isn't a vibe. It's a filter, and the noise just got louder.
